I have seen that on most counties that allow trapping. Some allow 30 foxes. Why does it say it expires in 2010? Does that mean trapping will end then? As my grandaddy would say, you would have to hire a Philadelphia lawer to understand all this mess! But thats 10 foxes that will not be on my farm any more!

Jimmy Im willing to do some foot work here in Cumberland Co on the foothold issue. Cause what good is a fox an coyote season if ya cant use a trap (foothold that is)? What would ya be able to use off your own property? Lets see...ummmm a 220 coni is all I can think of since we cant use snares (except on beaver) wouldnt want to use a 330... so whats left "sruggs shoulders" I cant think of nothin right off hand except maybe.. oh yeah a "cage trap" hahahah now thats a good one!!!!

I would push it as a coyote control issue. It could be changed fairly easily I would think. People(politicians) just don't know what is needed in most wildlife mgt. issues.

The coyote probably got all these seasons passed. The Cumberland County local law could probably be repealed as I am sure that the law was not even on their minds at the time. We just need a resident who votes to take up the issue. I, and the NCTA, will help.
I believe that the 2010 thing is a three year trial period for local laws no matter what they are. If there are no moves to repeal it, it stands as I understand the process.
Another problem with the local laws is having a trap size restriction. I tell folks not to mention that as any fox that you catch in a trap that is not allowed by the local law is illegally caught and must be released. Catch a fox in a modified #2 Bridger set for coyotes, and he must be released if the 1 1/2 size is specified in the local fox trapping law. Mention padded jaw traps and they get to thinking that those are probably best for everything. Then, you are trapping everything, land or water, with a padded trap.
I'm just an old retired cop, but I have dealt with local, county, state and federal politicians/governments. I have a basic idea of how they think. One must think through anything before letting them get their hands on it. It is lots easier to get something passed than to change it after it is enacted.

Let me know what I need to do Jimmy, here in Cumberland co.
No nick, we dont mention what size or rubber jawed or not. Just gotta say we want foot hold traps to catch coyotes an fox. other wise we`ll have to get our ropes out an lasso them.. or would that be considered a snare?? lol

If you go back and look at all the fox bills, they were filed with the 10 limit and all the restrictions on trap sizes and chain set up. Kind of leads me to beleive that the representative filed it that way for some reason.

Bob Richardson will tell you that the 10 limit was not in the original law as it was submitted, nor was there a trap size restriction. It was passed that way twice by his commissioners. These bills jump several hoops in Raleigh, that is why I am trying to get to the bottom of it.

That is a local law that will have to be repealed by the commissioners. A voter in that county needs to make a presentation to them about why. Again, the coyote approach probably will gain the most support. I'll help.

How can I get info on changing the laws here in Davidson county. I go to church with one of our county commissioners and he's all for it. He might be able to help sway the vote. Again I have no info but can someone get me it. I can get the motion on the docket if someone wants to come and talk..... Let me know. If anyone is interested call me at 336.731-4472 I don't check on here much now that season is out.
