I have connected with peat, but I tried something the other day. I got some dry sandy dirt from under a bridge near a creek on my buddies property. It works good. It beds real solid and it just seems more natural than peat. It will still freeze though if it gets wet and cold.

i got some bag top soil from lowes works for me.

I was planing down some black walnut and saved a big bag of shavings, seems to look natural and work good when everything else is wet
