The group of fox hunters who are opposing us are not the pen runners. These are hunters who run foxes outside the pens. I heard negative comments from them about pens in the hallway after the meeting. They didn't seem to think too much of the pens.
They are paranoid that we are going to deplete the fox population. Ignorance sometimes is very difficult to cure. Even after the wildlife guy gave contradictory evidence to this thought, they disregarded it, because they think the info he provided is biased. They say the fox population numbers are arrived at by the trappers harvest reports. Therefore, can't be trusted.
The wildlife fella said there are currently 39 counties where fox trapping is legal. He said here have been no incidents in those counties where trapping has caused any problems. The fox hunters didn't have much to say about that, but what could they say?

good luck on the trapping issue in wayne county. from what i gather most houndsmen and pen owners support a trapping season. there is a small number of outside foxhunters who don't want any kind of trapping anywhere and there isn't anything that anybody can do to change that. i love to trap and run dogs year around but i also know that during trapping season both sides are to be aware of the other. i don't seem to understand most of them because they seem to want their cake and eat it too. they don't want you to trap, but they are always willing to buy some for their running grounds. go figure??? keep in mind that most houndsmen run in the pens now do to it being easier to keep up with the dogs but there are still a few guys who just love to run the outside and these are the ones we will have to work with. as a trapper, houndsmen and board of director member of the north carolina running hounds assoc. i want to thank everyone that has put fourht effort to stop the anti penning bills. anyone who needs to contact me or needs me to help fellow trappers out please fill free to call me @ 252-240-9045. once again thanks for your support of the houndsmen in nc. kenny dean

I recently heard that the Duplin County Commissioners voted in favor of a fox trapping season in Duplin County. All that's left for them is for it to go to the legislature. That one is just south of us, and they were the most anti foothold county in the state, not long ago.
I heard that the commissioner who led the charge to ban footholds in Duplin County years ago is also the one who spearheaded the effort to get fox trapping legalized in Duplin County.

just to let a few of you know that the fox hunters that are fighting you on this law do not care much about the pen law. i have called several people trying to draw support for wayne county trappers and they were all in support of you. as a board member of the nc running hound assoc i have talked to many people on this issue and all support your efforts. the only problem you have is that this is a local ordinance. we have no board members in wayne county to stand up for you and i am sorry for that but thats the way it is. in your meeting you should make the people who do not live in wayne county leave the room because they do not vote in the county and should not have a say so. this point should be made. like i said in a previous post, you are fighting the outside hunter who has his mind set on keeping all of the foxes in his area to himself. the people who you supported in the pen bill appreciate it greatly and are supporting you as best we can. good luck and if common sense prevails then you should have no problem.

Hey guys, the year is quickly ending. We have had our commissioners meeting almost 5 months ago. In Wayne county the issue can be tabled forever, or if desired by a commissioner, it can be brought up for a vote. I've heard an encouraging word from a county commissioner. If everyone would please contact some of our county commissioners and ask when the vote to allow fox trapping in Wayne County will take place, and don't forget to let them know that your in favor of trapping foxes and coyotes. You don't have to tell them if you are from Wayne County or not, that was a tactic the dog hunters used to try to show greater numbers than the three from Wayne County that actually came outThe commissioners are as follows(it probably won't do any good to call the person with an * by their name):
*Roland M. "Bud" Gray* Chairman District 5 475 Mark Edwards Road LaGrange, NC 28551 Phone: (919) 778-2641
C. Munroe "Jack" Best, Jr. Vice-Chairman District 6 809 Mill Road Goldsboro, NC 27534 Work Phone: (919) 583-9290 Cell Phone: (919) 920-9988
Wilbur E. "Andy" Anderson District 1 270 Airport Road Pikeville, NC 27863 Phone: (919) 736-3711
J. D. Evans District 2 P. O. Box 37 Dudley, NC 28333 Phone: (919) 735-5684
John M. Bell District 3 507 Stadium Drive Goldsboro, NC 27530 Phone: (919) 735-0253
Steve Keen District 4 412 NC Highway 581 S (919) 920-7023
Dr. Sandra McCullen At Large District 108 Sleepy Creek Drive Dudley, NC (919) 734-3274
Also, their e-mail for the commissioners as a whole is:
