The Wayne County Commissioners will have fox trapping in Wayne County on their agenda on the 16th of June. Two of the commissioners may be sympathetic towards us, but there is one who isn't.
The commissioner who isn't has a cousin who is a fox hunter and I understand the fox hunters plan to show up in numbers to protest a trapping season in Wayne County.
I don't have a location or time yet, but will post it when I do.

You would think the fox hunters would want OUR SUPPORT right now. Isn't that ironic.

Please post information when it becomes available; trappers and fox hunters need to be able to realize that we can both co exist and enjoy our recreations/ traditions simultaneously.
....maybe I will be able to make this one.

Here's the last info I got on it in an email from one of the county commissioners. It was a forward from the County Manager's office.
"Joe Folta, District 3 Wildlife Biologist, will speak at the Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 as requested regarding fox trapping issues. No Board action is expected to be made at this meeting. However, a time for further consideration may be scheduled."
I understand that the meeting is going to be at 9am in the County Commissioner's meeting room, which is at 224 East Walnut St. Goldsboro, NC 27530

Yes, its 9am tomorrow morning. For any who can make it, it is in the Wayne County Courthouse. Take the elevator to the fourth floor, and when you get out of the elevator, the meeting room will be on your left.
I hope there will be some that can make it. A tuesday morning at 9am is tough on working folk.

If any of you cannot make it, please give me a call. I know of a communication method that works that blankets all of the commissioners. 919-921-1265 John

At the meeting today, the man from the Wildlife Division gave his talk and the commissioners agreed to have a public hearing on it August 4, 2009 at 9:30 am.
There were seven of us who showed up in support of trapping that I know of and there were about 10 - 12 fox hunters.
After the meeting, they said in the hall that they will show up in numbers at the meeting and bury us.

Next time you talk to one of the fox hunters, remind them that the NCTA has poured the most money, time, and effort into defeating the fox pen bill than anybody other than the fox hunters. Courteously remind them that we're not losing our trapping ground, and if they're not careful, they're gonna lose what little bit of land they have left to run. They might not want to alienate their only allies, as they're not looking so hot in the public eye right now.

What is the deal with these morning meetings?! At least there is some warning this time...
Ld, it goes beyond logical thinking. The problems we are likely facing here are the same as when we encounter other groups who oppose trapping. I hate to make that analogy about a group that enjoys outdoor recreational activities but the hurdle here is what is "not known about trapping" and overcoming those established determinations/ emotions.

But you are right.....they should not want to alienate trappers.

Morning meetings are used to keep attendance down. Thats a common tactic. Esp when it's subjects teh board either doesn't want to hear, or want the public to comment on.
I feel for you guys in Wayne county. We faced little opposition here in Craven. It seems the further west you go, the more fox hunters you have.
May I make a suggestion? I don't know how accurate the records you keep are, but if you can make the suggestion that you trap coyotes for customers and to keep the coyote problem under control, but have had to release X number of fox from your sets in each of the past years you might be able to show the fox hunters are not keeping the game numbers under control. Also, push that you and the rest of the trappers will for go coyote trapping and allow them to swarm the area until fox are allowed to be taken again. It's just not time/cost effective to target yotes when you have to weed through the fox to get them. Also, the fox caught in your traps just become fodder for the yotes.
It will be an uphill fight, but you have to be able to convincingly show that you have a greater impact on CONTROL of coyotes and fox than the fox hunters do. Just my .02 and good luck fellas.
