I am new to trapping in NC and am a little confused about this shock absorbing spring thing. Can someone explain what they are talking about and where to get them?

I deal mainly with John Deaton his # is (919)971-3273 or Minnesota Trapline Products (search them online).
To answer your question, a shock absorbing device has to be used if you use a chain longer than 8 inches. That means if your chain is longer than 8 inches from the base of the trap to where it meets the ground, you need a shock absorbing device. DOES NOT APPLY TO TRAPS SET ON SLIDE WIRE DROWNERS, ONLY FOR DRY LAND SETS. I do not personally use these devices but believe there are only a couple that are authorized for use in the state, the ones that come from the manufacturer are not. Someone in this forum may be able to tell you which ones are legal (i.e. JC Conners, PIT, etc.) Check with your local game warden to be certain. He/ She is the one who would be issuing the citation.

I might be able to get you some Paws-i-Trip springs for a good price if you want. I know the guy that makes them and they seem to work well. I'll check on the current prices.

Check the regulations book-springs are not approved by brand. Spring (shock absorbing device) must test 40-75 pounds. Standard equipment springs usually fit within this range. Others- J.C. Connor, PIT, Sleepy Creek- make springs within this range. I researched it before submitting the proposal. I have them on almost all land traps. They have proven their worth to me, especially on toe caught critters. Swivel, one link of chain (tag goes here), swivel, spring, swivel, quick link.

I use JC Connor inline shock springs. They make the poundage to be legal and are tougher than SC. I have not tried Pit springs, no need to the JC's work great.

Same here, BM, except that I use the springs off the #3 Victor SC. I set the Victors up as stated above.
