Welcome to this forum
If the ground is hard the trap will have a less chance to fire when the animal steps on it. If it rains the ground will harden when it dries up. I would make the hole farther in the ground so they will move more to trie to get the bait.I hope it work for you.

Like minker said, dig your hole at least 12" deep that way they cant just reach in there snag the bait and go.

And plug the hole with a wad of grass so they have to get it out first and should be shuffling their feet more whilst rooting

Can you give us a photo of the sets you are using? Where are the foot tracks in relation to your traps? I'm new at all this too, so I have the same problems, or have encountered them (dig outs)

What is the size of your hole? Big holes allow animals to get their paws in small holes do not. Small holes still let odor out.
What is the pan tension on the trap? 2 lbs will target fox, coon, coyote, cat, etc....if just targeting coyote I like to bump it up to 3-4 lbs.
What size trap are you using? Anything larger than a number 2 is overkill for fox/coyote in NC. #2 is plenty big for coyote and will hold a gray fox as well. If you get larger than that, the trap is really too heavy for gray fox.
Where is the trap in relation to the hole? This I will say is just my opinion, there are more opinions on this than there are fish in the ocean. Someone is sure to call me crazy but I put my jaw (w/ dog) almost touching back of the hole, usually within 1/2 inch of hole.

It's probably a grey fox. Put some sticks, rocks around and behind the set to make him have to get it from the front. Come back next day and collect gray fox.
