i have a few leg hold traps but there not offset as NC law requires. I need to know if anyone knows of a kit or some how I can modify the traps I have to turn them into offset traps. Also whats the best place to purchase trapping supplies?

Welded lug will offset them. Unless you are handy with a welder, or you know someone who is, it might be simpler to sell and buy new or trade them. See John Deaton at Old North State.

How big are they? They only have to be offset if they're used on land and are 5.5 inches or larger.

The jaw width measurement is taken on the inside of the jaws. If the jaw spread is 5 1/2" up to 7 1/2 inches, and set on dry land they need to be offset. If less than 5 1/2 it does not matter what kind of jaw they have.

"b. is horizontally offset with a closed-jaw offset of at least 3/16 of an inch for a trap with a jaw spread of more than 5 1/2 inches. This provision does not apply if the trap is set in the water with a quick-drown type set."
More than is the same as "greater than." Not "greater than or equal to." Therefore if it is "less than or equal to 5.5 inches," it does not need to be offset.
Jimmy or somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think the real question should be what are you intending to target? If its coyote, I personally believe you don't need a large trap. A #2 would be fine, in fact 1.75 is what I like to use. Although, I like a trap that is offset anyway. We have a healthy gray fox population in this state, especially in the eastern portion, and it is too small an animal to use a big trap. Too much damage especially for those of you who do live market trapping.

The only thing I don't like about an offset trap is that if I set a 1.75 or a 2 for bobcat or coyote, and a coon sticks his foot in it, he'll pull it right out. Then I have not only a wasted trap night on a cat/coyote set, but I lost my catch to boot.
