It does not matter if sand gets under water traps. The pan will seep down into the sand when the animal steps on it. Trust me I've tried.

I used bubble wrap last year.... I took soem of the big ones (quarter sized bubbles) and mashed them a bit to where they were softer. then put that under the pan. it'll keep the sand out and it'll also allow the pan to compress. (we had a ton of it at work) I also used cut up sponges. Same deal, place under pan and it'll keep the white sand out, but will still compress.
As for pan seeping, I had a horrid time with it in a creek last year. The stand would back fill under the pan and keep it from dropping. Hence the different things I tried to keep it out. coffee filters didn't work as they just turned to water paper in the creek.. didn't keep anything out.

With night latches I never use pan covers and haven't had any problems. With night latches the pan fall is minimal.
