I was tuning some of my traps this weekend and noticed a hole bored into the frame near the joint that binds to the sections of the frame together. Whats the hole for? I sized it and it appears to fit a J-Hook cleanly. Is it used for center swiveling when you don't have a reinforcement bar underneath like you would have if you welded a bar down there? If not.. whats the purpose of the hole?

Ok... one more question.. if they are for center swiveling.. why do htey come with the chain on the side of the jaw? I know there is something I'm missing here. I've already rigged a couple of traps to use the hole..just looking for input on what to expect.

YOUR CATCH WILL BE BETTER OFF USING THE CENTER HOLE RYE, IT KEEPS ITS FOOT IN THE CENTER OF THE TRAP, RATHER THAN WORKING IT TO ONE SIDE. THAT IS JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION!

I am sure books have been and can be written on the pros and cons of center swiveling vs side swiveling. I know that Slim Peterson uses side swiveled traps if that means anything to you.
I use both center swiveled and side swiveled traps. Both work for me.
What I will tell you is that unless your traps are beefed up with a baseplate you are asking for trouble using that little center swiveling hole. Here is what can and will happen sooner or later. You will catch a coyote and he will cause the base of the trap to bend and when it bends the jaws will pop out and he will be gone. Of course the same coyote could destroy a side swiveled trap as well.
In my opinion I would not attach my trap using that bottom hole.

But if you baseplate the trap, I think the perfered methode is center swilving.

Thanks for the input guys.. I am going to use the center hole on my 1.5's for coon. There are several swivles on those chains as well. My 1.65's are already based and centered. Biscuit, you are helping me out with the rest so when I get those bars in I'll center the #2's and the 1.75's on the base plates.
again, thanks for the input guys.
