I tried a different recipe tonight for taking the shine off my new trap tags (the copper ones). I had left my new ones outside in a bucket for about 2 weeks and they were still pretty bright looking.
You will need to do this outside because of the smell!
Get an old glass mayo jar and mix 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 cup of clorox and 1/2 cup of white venegar in a mason jar (enough to cover 100 tags)
Let this sit for about 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours then dump the mix outside away from pets, children and anything else of value and rinse the tags with plenty of fresh water.
I dried mine off and the bright copper shine was gone and replaced with the dull tarnish of an old penny. You might have to scrub the blue oxidation off some of them, but this works pretty well.
This formula will rust other metals really good too so be careful. obxfishnuts

This will be my first year trapping and my county starts Dec. 15th. I put shock springs on all my leg holds last night, then dipped all my connibears and leg holds this afternoon in Formula One.
Now that's all done all I have to do is scout some and I might even go try and catch a striper or a speckled trout this evening.
Good luck to you too! obxfishnuts

I put mine on a screen and put a blowtorch to them. Let them get red hot and then allow to cool. No more shine!

I just roll mine up in the chain somewhere and put black electrical tape over them. But I have the cheap write-yer-own tags.

do you think the salt and clorox technique would remove the info on those write-on tags? I am going to try them this year and was wondering if it would ruin them or if it even really matters?
