Mountainman,
The one thing that has helped more than anything with scraping beavers is to NOT split them all the way to the lower lip. I only split to between the front legs. That leaves enough of a pocket to fit over the beam and keep them from slipping. Once I am done with the fleshing, I finish the split.
Also, I freeze them green, and flesh them partially thawed. everything shaves off a lot easier that way, and there is a lot less mess.

Thanks G3T. Im sure that will be a big help to me. I do need to buy one of those good fleshing knives. With that good info it shouldnt be a problem for me now.

Can you give some measurements on that setup for your beam? Overall length and length from tip to the beginning of the slope?

Do all furs flesh easier frozen then partially thawed. I have got that grinner we caught rough skinned and in the freezer. He is going to be the first one that I have ever messed with, I haven't lost much if I make a mess of him. The skinning was real easy, peeled him him right off, done it just like traps 4 kids said in there section on fur handling.

Be careful with grinners, their leather is really thin. Its really easy to rip him with the knife. A lot less pressure is needed with him than other critters. Yes, this is the voice of experiance talking. I messed up several last year cuz I tossed 'em on the beam right after a coon and didn't adjust myself
