Those 2 layers of 1/4 inch plywood had styrofoam sandwiched in between. The rat should go down that 4" PVC into the lower cage and expire there.

Hey Rodney is that a 1 1/2 pinch pan? I have figured out how to keep from losing the pans off of them.

Dont matter where you got it buddy its cool anyway. Heck sometimes I just move logs out of the way of my kayak in beaver ponds. I tie em off with tie wire so they stay that way. If theres good rat sign Ill put a few traps on. Got a double on rats in two traps that way this season.

It is my float,
Woodsman showed me his at the NCTA convention in Smithfield and I made some almost like his. I modified the trap anker to meet my needs. I run them on a boat and just pull them up. The trap is equiped with a drowner slide and two bricks for the anker.
The trap is fitted with a trap pan extention that is pop rivited onto the original pan. I got them 2nd hand from an experienced mink trapper. They are set with a hair trigger.
It's not a a gag them terds got deposited there by rats. I just removed the rat, reset the trap, rebaited the float and snaped the pic. I left them on there so more rats would think nothin was wrong with resting up there.
The red thing is a cherry. I heard that they like the smell of cherry so I went to SAM's and got a 64 ounce jar of them. I wasn't able to tell what bait worked. I had a piece of apple, Cherry, Hawbarker Muskrat # 5 and sometimes carrot sticks stuck in holes I drilled on both sides of the log.
I have had a blast running them. They are very effective I once had 7 rats out of 9 floats holding rats when I cheked em.
They are good on lakes, I have tried them on two farm ponds with lots of rat sign but with no luck. The rats never even used them as a toilet.
Thanks for the posts
PIG.

Hey Pigtrapper thanks! They work! I built two yesterday. Only difference is I put 2 traps on them.
Floated them yesterday, and this morning, had 2 rats. One floater wasn't touched, the other had a double!
The cool thing is I set them with my dad's old Victor #1 & #1.5 longsprings. These traps haven't been set in over 50 years.
I also learned that a 1.5 ls is not heavy enough to drown a BIG male muskrat that is caught by a hindfoot! The smaller male was front foot caught in a #1, and was down for the count.

I should be carrying some floats in myself in a few more days. I'll put a few in for rats and try some in what I figure to be good mink locations- vertical structure or steep banks in long deep places and at least one good looking creek junction with lots of rats at the upper end of what is sure to be a completely untapped deep water mink and rat area with a number of channels and side creeks. I see no signs left on the banks now of the old days and after the boom except for the almost unrecognizable fencing in a blind mink set from a considerable time back.
