OK fellas I need some good experienced advice here. I have access to trap lands in wayne county, I live in Johnston. In thinking this through, after some input from others also, I am going to probably have a rough go of getting a fox law for wayne county. Here is my train of thought, instead of fighting a useless battle within a county I don't reside, why not petition the state for fox regulation to be turned over to the WRC. I don't mind writing letters and pestering people about issues. I am new trapper, but I have developed a love for it that won't die until I do. I am ready to start using the mail and phone ever how I need to get this thing going. I am going to contact my Uncle Vernon on this also, I realize this will be a hard fight, but the dog hunting for other animals such as deer and rabbits is regulated through the WRC, I see no difference with the Fox. Some of you older guys please weigh in on this, I need a good idea of where to start, I am willing to follow this through, and it will need the support of every single person in this site.

I am waiting to see what the board of directors have up their sleeve on this. These older and wiser trappers really know how to put the flame to them politicians. Especially the ones that know how to use that fancy legal talk. Maybe we can get some momentum going, may be a long fight but I think it is one we can eventually win!

You better vote for somebody other than Beverly Perdue for Governor. She is in the pocket of the dog men. Don't forget that.
I think you need to re-examine the " state wide " thing a little closer.
The only way this can happen "state wide" will be the relcasification of the fox from game animal to a fur bearer. Your two biggest assets to make this happen are the now very public fox pen issues that are now in the public eye and the coyote. These two cards if played corectly will be very helpful. Even here there is the flaw that the coyotes will be reducing fox numbers and the biologist will not want trappers taking more fox.
Keep in mind you might be right in the middle of the good old days right now !!!!!!

Thats what I dont understand. If it is a game animal, why wouldnt NCWRC regulate that? Correct me if I am wrong but arent deer, bear, squirrel, rabbits, etc game animals? The counties dont regulate them.

I am no expert here these are just my opinions and ramblings.
The dog hunters want them to remain game animals. As you know you cannot trap game animals except rabbits.
Foxes should have never been removed from the fur bearer list years ago.
The Fox hunter lobby will not allow NCWRC to reclassify them. NCWRC will follow the money.

Several comments here:
First, the NCWRC does not have the authority to reclassify fox. The legislature took that away from them years ago at request of the fox hunters. As game animals they can be hunted, but not bought or sold.
Second, the biologists here want a fox trapping season. They're not as worried about the depradation from coyotes on top of the fox trapping because more coyotes would be trapped if more trappers had landlines, especially with the pens paying $100/yote (I know this from personal conversations with the biologists).
Third, an animal can be classified as both game/furbearer. This is the case for raccoons and opossum.
Hope this helps shed some light.

I have nothing else to say on a public forum. I am glad Jimmy has weighed in here, that's why I put it up, as instructed, I am going to wait until later when I can discuss this with some other folks. When the directors mull it over maybe we will gat a plan together.
As for the post on here, my opinion only ENOUGH SAID! atleast for now. Rodey feel free to lock or the thread anytime.

If you guys need a hand with some contacts with in the NC Legislature I know of a few through a couple of different people. Two are in the House and one is a Wake Co. Commissoner. I am just not sure who makes what laws. Keep us updated.

It would be great if fox laws where better aligned with science and land owners vs politics and special interests, but the few conversations I have had with WRC folks on this make me think I better not hold my breath. No trapping season on private lands with very high populations and no selling of a marketable resource with value sure seems out of touch.
BTW - I don't think the coyotes impact/drive off the greys. Mostly just the reds...... and I could be wrong here, but it seems to me the grey is the truly native species and reds are as much non-native as yotes having largely come from Europe initially in this neck of the woods.

Studa...
From what I've read on it both from other trappers and from teh state game biologist.. when you get yotes, you start loosing fox.. both grey and red.
