I think snares can be a good tool, but like most anything else could be problematic if misused or used in the wrong situations, environments, or set the wrong way. While I would like to have them as an option I can't help but have a little concern about situations of misuse being a risk to what we do have. I don't have hounds, but I have friends that do. They have a lot of time and money in them and enjoy them like I enjoy trapping. They don't present a 'risk' to my trapline and I sure would not want to find myself in the situation where I had choked down one of their dogs..... even if it was one that got off track from the property they had permission to run them on. It's an interesting discussion which I don't think has a simple answer, but worth discussing to see 'if' there is an acceptible middle ground.
I have a question....... does anyone know when the current laws/regulations on snaring were put in place and what they had been prior to that?

You pose a very good question to check out the prior laws and regs.Once you review these and see if they were in place, then the reason why they were revoke you will know where to throw the water to put out the fire. ie....What ammunition you need to have the regs brought back. Was the coyote population the same then ? State records on royalities should tell. Was it in the 70' or early 80's when foxes were $ 200. Line up all the facts before that anti's bowl you down.( or bark you out of town)

I know in the mid 80's nothing could be snared. I would say that the change in allowing snares for beavers occured about 10 years later as a way to control the "new beaver problem".

As I heard it snares became legal in NC as follows. I heard this from someone here that all of you know and respect. I am sure my details are not exact and if he wishes he can sure chime in and correct anything.
Some gentlemen with a lot of influence with the NCWRC had a beaver problem on his property.
He hired a beaver trapper.
These beaver were way way back in the swamp and as you know it is hard to carry a bunch of 330's 1/2 mile back in a beaver swamp.
This beaver trapper used snares - legal or not. The trapper showed this man how well they worked and guess what ? This man went back to Raleigh and told the right people to make beaver snares legal.
