Why are pond beavers so different than swamp or creek beavers?
Been on a pond and set 4 sets thinking I would have at least one beaver the first night. I had one foot trap snapped in front of a castor mound but no any action at any of the other sets. Been two nights now and nothing. What am I doing wrong?

I think cause they have so much water to roam. They are not chanellized so easy like in a creek or swamp. How big is the pond?

Go up to the head of the pond. I'm doing a pond beaver job now. Got 1 yesteday and 2 last night. All caught at the head of the pond.....opposite the dam. Had no action at the dam end. They are just harder to trap because they have so much water Imo.

It's about 3 acr. with another pond up above that's about 2 acr. No sign on the upper pond. Very little sing on the lower pond a feed bed and three caster mounds. That's about it. I'll try to take some pic's tomorrow so some of the beaver pro's can take a look.

I got the same problem with the one I am working really... only place I can really get them to focus is if I put a hole in the dam.. other than that, it's worse than a needle in a haystack.

In a pond its usually one colony of beavers that are there, where a creek or swamp can have a mixture of colonies. Sometimes it takes a few nites to calm down after you set up. I think they are more sensitive than we think. However, this time of year a castor based lure can be your ace in the hole, because they are very active. I call a feed bed a spot on the bank where they bring limbs to eat. Look for a bunch of peeled sticks in shallow water. Give it some time and try different things.ie I had two spots on a dam 5 ft apart that were crossovers that didn't catch anything for a week then we tried lure near both traps(330) and had 2 beavers that nite.

If you have 330's you can find the runs the beaver are using to climb up on sure and set them.

I'm not one of the many great beaver trappers on here, but its been my understanding that you don't really bait or lure a slide or a run. They're using that anyway. The whole idea of putting a trap there is that sooner or later they'll swim or walk through it. Its just another blind set. Am I wrong anybody?

Ldsoldier,I think the castor is your ACE in the hole as bmltura says ,not necessary but the iceing on the cake this time of the year bk Pigtrapper i like this set up you can use 2 lodge poles/deadsticks if there are no trees in the water.even a stump and a pole.i drive them 12"apart and put lure 18"above the water line,i like to cut a notch for a place to hold my lure.i stay clear of the den and also agree with Bottemline on working the head of the pond, hope this helps some bk

Thanks everyone, I got him in one of my original sets on Friday. I don't think the beaver was living on the pond but passing through every night or so looking for a new home. There was only one crawl out and thats where I caught him in a 330. Sometimes you just have to wait them out.
