Yesterday I caught a possum at an otter toilet, why was he there? I did not use any lure or bait, he got the news!

He was there doing what all wild animals do. He was looking for two things.
Food & Sex

I hear you. Possums are just everywhere I guess. Sounds like he was jsut going from point A to point B.
Now if you will take just a minute to think about this.
An animal that has poor eyesight and makes his living using his nose to look for food was just caught at a set that did not have any smells. Only eye appeal.
Therefore an animal like the otter that uses his sight more than his nose should have no trouble finding your set.

At the otter toilets there is a lot of "up-chuck" of the daily eatings of the otter. The fish scale etc and crawdad pinchers do not go through the digestion track- it's a littlehard on the digestion system. Otters being mustelids do " spray" scent at these sites marking territory. Look 10 yard to the side of the toilet and you will see canide paths coming there to investigate.

Anybody ever notice how 'possums never seem to be aggresive in a trap, or try to get away? They just sit there and look at you like "Oh great, now what?," or "What do you want?"

They can fool you sometimes and have bit some people. I had a possum in a dirthole set a couple days before the season ended. The cable extension was tangled in brush with the possum mostly hidden under leaves. I aproached slowly to make sure it wasnt a skunk, then tapped it a couple times with the toe of my boot. It didn't come out so I reached down and pulled it by the back. It turned quick and snapped where my hand was as I pulled back quick. Pretty sharp looking teeth on that med possum. I've caught some big old boars that had around 2.5" fangs.
