I know that you can make your own fish and meat lures somehow but I don't really know the process. I was told that you pretty much let something rot until it turns to liquid. DO y'all make your own or do you just buy it.

I just buy mine hamman.(Lure) I have made some bait before. You let whatever meat you are using "taint", not rot. You more of a sour smell to the meat rather than putred(rotten). I preserve mine with Dobbins SOL. Go to www.trapperman.com and click on catalog. You can get alot of info. out of the archives there as well. Lot's of different people makes different lures. I use what works for me. Paul Dobbins owns that site, and he's from Goldsboro NC. I know his lures were tested in NC. www.snareone.com is owned by Newt Sterling. There are 100 more, just have to look around, try things, and find out what works for you.

I am going to try something a little new for me this year. I have a local grill catching all there bacon and sausage drippings for me. Then I am going to take some cheap dry cat food and mix with it in 5 gallon buckets. I plan on using it to pre bait for coon and fox. I plan to start putting it out about 2 weeks before the season opens. Then I plan using a diffrent bait at the set when the season opens.
Will see howit works.

I made some deer meat bait this year, by tainting it in a glass(1 gal.) jar with the lid barley loose. Then I added 1 cup of sodium benzoite mixed with water. It has a rank smell but is not rotten.

I have used cracklins and bacon grease before for foxes and it does work for them, but it really drew the possums more than anything else. I don't use it anymore. I don't use dog or cat food because it is a familuar smell to dogs and cats. I think beaver and muskrat meat is best, because it is natural smelling and fairly easy to come by.

I made a gallon using beaver meat and yhe old Bill Nelson Formula. I gave it to some guys on here to try, as well as trying it myself. It has done very well. Making another batch right now. I had 2 gallons that I tainted the beaver strongly. One I added the formula to, and the other gallon I stuck in the freezer. The batch I'm working on now will be identical. It was alot of fun to make also.

Been experimenting with making my own coon bait. Been using a modified starter recipe that was given to me personally by Matt Jones for only $39.95. Both are fish based but one is stickier than the other. Both need more testing but I think both will work quite well come next fall. If they work well this winter I fell certain they will work good in warmer temps. I will tell you this much. It is absolutely amazing how much odor some of those oils give off. A half ounce will do a lot of bait.
