Since this will be my first year trapping in this great country, I am a little out of touch on how to remove a trapped skunk from my traps should I catch one without getting sprayed. If someone would educate me on this, I surely would appreciate it. It seems like I cannot go one single day without smelling one that sprayed and got ran over on I=95 Going to work.... LOL!!

Nothing is quite fail safe I am afraid buit there are a couple relatively good methods. The syringe on a stick works well in cage or steel traps if you have a steady hand. Aproach is key, move slow in a non threatening manner to avoid spooking it ease the pole in and stick it right in the heart/lungs area. You can also use an old blanket over the cages with a similar approach and take them to deep enough water to put it in for drowning. Then you could always pop it with a 22 and come back after you check the rest of your traps so the noxious fumes will dissipate some. I don't think I would reccomend it but one of my buddies could walk right up to one nice and easy pin its tail down and let it out of the trap without ever getting a threat of spray. I think it's a Cherokee thing...

I catch quite a few in town. They rather not have spraying there! I've had pretty good luck getting them settled down and simply carrying them to my van. A bunch have rode in there and none sprayed in my van. You could put your cage in a feed sack before you set. For a beginner, thats what I'd try. Then use the drown method.

you`d be money ahead to buy my "bob wendts fox trapping and more" dvd as it covers in detail no smell skunk killing and scent saving. lots more in the dvd, almost 4 hrs. nothing like actually seeing skunks done in with your own 2 eyes and how to cut out and save the essence. if you can`t pay for the dvd just on the skunk part I`d be surprised as the esssence sells fast at $10 an ounce. most trapper supply dealers sell the dvd , or you can get it direct from me too. it`s $59.95 picked up or $65.50 ppd. sold satisfaction guaranteed or monety trefunded. no pig in a poke.

Bob, I've heard its worth the money. I haven't seen it. Maybe I will sometime. I skin every skunk I get hold of. I get more out of the "other parts" than from the hides.

you are losing money on every skunk david. I avg over $60 a skunks and that is for the skunk, every single skunk, not pay to catch him. around 150 skunks a month along with my cats coyotes etc. 150 times $60............
