I was lookin around for info on the whens an whats on the leghold trap restrictions in Cumberland an Harnett county so I would have my ducks in a row for talking with our county commissioners, an after about 2 hours of looking up general statues an local laws an what not I came across this. This goes along with H-571 that gave Moore/Cumberland/Harnett a fox an coyote season. Its Bill # H-623 (there really is a trapping GOD) Short Title: Cumberland/Harnett Trapping. (Local) Sponsors: Representatives Lucas and Lewis (Primary Sponsors). Referred to: Wildlife Resources. March 14, 2007 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT to permit the taking of foxes and coyotes by trapping in cumberland and harnett counties. The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, there is an open season for taking foxes and coyotes by trapping from December 1 through February 20 of each year. During this season, all leghold traps set on dry land with solid anchor shall have at least three swivels in the trap chain and no leghold traps larger than size one and one‑half may be used. SECTION 2. A season bag limit of 10 applies in the aggregate to all foxes taken during the trapping season established in this act. No bag limit applies to coyotes taken under this act. SECTION 3. The Wildlife Resources Commission shall provide for the sale of foxes taken lawfully pursuant to this act. SECTION 4. This act applies only to Cumberland and Harnett Counties. SECTION 5. This act becomes effective October 1, 2007, and expires on September 30, 2010.

No Nick, read the other post about this subject. Everything hasn't passed yet. And if these laws are passed they will not go into effect until this coming trapping season. Just because the law passes, doesn't mean it takes effect right then.

If it passes it should take effect Oct 1st. An no Nick Harnett wasnt allowed to use steel jawed traps on land. You might want to brush up on the regs before next season so you dont get in trouble.

Do you want to be limited to a 1 1/2 trap for coyotes? Wouldn't you like to be able to trap other critters? Check with the County Attorney's office and get a copy of the local law. We especially need to know when it was enacted. It is a local law that needs to be repealed. The restriction is in the back of the Regulations Digest under the local law section.

Only Cumberland has the no trap on anothers land law. Also using a leg hold on land is ok for Harnett, you just have to let foxes go.
