Last Friday, the Ashe County Commissioners approved a local law fox trapping season with no limit or trap restrictions. At the same time, they also approved a local law raccoon trapping season with a no limit provision. Ashe County falls within the western area where raccoon trapping currently is prohibited by regulation.
NCTA District 7 Director Bob Richardson put the proposal together, got on the hearings agenda and now you see the results. Bob's standing as an NCTA District Director is important to me, but it was his individual effort that culminated in passage of these local laws. This is an example of what happens when a county resident takes the bull by the horns and works for change.
The next time someone asks, "When am I going to get such-and such- trapping season?", I'll just point out Bob and tell them to go ask him how to do it.

Excellent Jimmy. Very true. I'm glad to hear that "some" people listen. I have alot of foxhunters where I live. I'm trying, but I'm sure there will be alot of opposition presented to the county commissioners. I wish it could be secretly passed. Thanks!!

Great news. I hope we start to see more changes in other counties as well.

Great story!! So let me get this straight, LOCAL commisioners can change the law and there is nothing that NCDNR can do about it, they don't even have to discuss it with em? So now Ashe county has a coon and fox no limit season during the regular trapping season and the NCDNR just has to accept it? Also, could that same stratagy be used to make individual counties that have limits on coons and foxes be changed to a no limit season? where I live we have a 30 limit on coons. As many people as I know with coon problems it would be a short season for me for coons if I do it right.

Local laws are enacted by the County Commissioners. The law is then sent to Raleigh for approval by the Legislature. This usually is not a problem as the Legislators feel that the local government knows what is best for them. Not a done deal, but usually everything goes OK.
Once it is passed in Raleigh, it becomes the law of the land IN THAT COUNTY ONLY. The Wildlife Enforcement Officers enforce that law as written, regardless of what limit or other restriction is in the regulations. Hyde County has had very similar laws for years.

Jimmy,
As a resident of Guilford County, I would like to learn more about how this was enacted. We have 24 confirmed cases of rabies here in the county, more than a couple of them foxes. Yet, we cannot trap fox. I will do whatever I can to change the law.
Is there a way for me to get a list of licensed trappers in the county? I may be able to get them on my side.
Thanks,
John

I'll mail you a list. Give me your address again. I can't read my own writing in my book. Can't write, can't read, can't work a camera and post pictures. Next thing you know, I'll be in diapers again.

sounds good to me, the more the merrier I guess? I just don't know how to approach the commissioners. I talked to Jimmy saturday but he was so busy that he just couldn't find the feller that was successful. I was the 27yr old bald guy in overalls that interupted your lunch in case you forgot jimmy .

It was good to meet you. I am sorry that I couldn't do more for you at that time. Give me a few days to get over this past weekend and I'll get back to normal. At least you let me sit down. I was really happy to be so busy. That shows that we apparently did something right to get so many people with an interest in trapping together in one place. I fnally left at 8:30 Saturday night.

Well it was my first and it will definitely NOT be the last one I attend! I would still like to find out some way to talk to him to hear exactly what he did to convince a panel of folks that are elected by lots of folks that would not approve of trapping.
