Go to the North Carolina Legislature site and search S1293 by number. Senator Swindell (Democrat) Nash, Wilson has introduced a bill that he wants to be in efect July 1 that substantially increases fees and adds new restrictions. Of particular interest is that a tag costing up to $2.25 per furbearer be attached before you can sell the pelt. How about $2.25 on a $1.00 possum? There are too many things in the bill to mention here that severely restrict and change the way that we operate.
Don't panic just yet, I am on it. Ironically, I learned of this from a hound hunter organization that has a lobbyist in the Legislature. Remember that boat that I have been saying that we would all be in one day? Look at what it does to them.

Just type in North Carolina Legislature, it will come up at the top. Then, you can search the bill by number part using the number. I'm not too sharp on this machine, but it worked for me.

OK, here's the info on this bill. Perry Sumner explained that the bill has been law since 1980 when all hunting, fishing and trapping laws were rewritten. The tagging provision is nothing new, NCWRC just has never required tagging. The items either deleted or underlined in this revision are the changes. The $50.00 annual fee to maintain your ADC permit is the change that most concerns us. No big deal- one groundhog. Fox tagging is required by a different statute. I'll work on that one this year.
Sorry for getting things stirred up on this, but like I said, we shouldn't panic until all the info is known.

Thanks for being on it. Thats a new one on me. The lobbyist is a woman and she was at the Nem Bern regs. meeting speaking for them. It was a wake up call for me.

I let my ADC Permit go when I had to go to Raleigh every year to get retested. It just to easy to call a Game Warden. And let him to write the permit.

Jimmy, of all people I didn't think that you would make that kind of comment, $50 more dollars...no big deal?? I think we are all together on this when I say that our sport cost enough already without giving them another dime just because some politician is wanting to satisfy some tree hugging, PETA sort. I don't think that it is not fair that I just paid $175 to the NCWRC and took a 2 day course given by them to qualify me to be a ADC worker and that I still have to buy a $25 trapping license to satisfy them. I am not trying to pick a fight here with you Jimmy and I know that you try and tackle the big fish first and let the little ones go but I am saying that it seems that we are getting "taxed twice" on a few things in the trapping world in NC.

now I agree with you that Jimmy looks out for us every single day of his life and I am truely thankful to Jimmy and NC Trappers Association. Every dime that I can return to my pocket makes my life easier, ESPECIALLY with the wife when she sees what I already spend on my hunting, fishing and trapping habits. That $50 would pay for 1/2 dozen traps or a tank of gas and a weeks worth of driving and checking out traps and new spots. I am sort of a penny pincher and I try to keep account of every dollar I spend. I personally dont think you should have to tag any animal hide before selling it. it don't matter if it's a $2.50 tag on a $75 bobcat or a $2.50 tag on a $1.50 possum. Both takes $2.50 out of my pocket and puts it where? Does it go into a general fund, wildlife fund, trappers education fund? How does that tag help me or you get more out of our hides or promote trapping?
When I can I promote trapping here in NC. I talked this site up at the WDCA class last week and I hope it helped us get a few folks that hadn't even heard about NCTrappers to climb aboard and help us get a better handle on trapping in NC.

The bobcat and otter tags are a Federal mandate for the CITIES tag laws. It has to be changed at the Federal level. There is talk of removing bobcats from the list. However, fox tags are unique to NC. It can be changed and I hope it does.

Don't worry about the tags.
Hamman, see me at the convention and I will explain my reasoning on the $50.00. It will surprise you and you just might agree. There is quite often a method to my madness. It might actually put money in your pocket in the long run. Remember, I am on your side.
Re: Bobcat tags. There is a study underway concerning the Mexican Bobcat that is somehow connected to the efforts to de-list our cats from CITES requirements.

those extra tags are just another way to make money. NC has some major budget problems and the governor is trying to fix it every way but how he should. I'm not gonna get political on here, so I'll stop. Just remember this in the next elections.

That's right soldier. Just goes to show what a lie the lottery was and how it would help the state. Only 1.5% goes towards our schools from the "education lottery".

Like I said, I'm not getting political on here. Around the campfire, however, that's a whole nuther story. (I do agree with you, by the way).
